Copilot and Canvas: build and plan with AI

Zapier · Practical · 8 min

Copilot speeds up building, and Canvas helps you see how many Zaps, tables and people fit together.

Copilot is Zapier's built-in AI assistant for building. You describe what you want in plain language, for example "when a Typeform is submitted, add the person to HubSpot and post their company in #sales", and Copilot drafts the Zap: it picks apps, events and field mappings. It can also add or replace steps in an existing Zap, explain fields, and help troubleshoot errors.

Copilot works across products too: it can set up tables, design forms, and help with AI steps. It offers an auto-build mode and a mode that asks before each change, and it keeps checkpoints you can go back to. As of Oct 2026 it is in open beta, so features still change.

Treat Copilot's work like a colleague's draft: test every step, check each mapping, and read the filters.

Canvas is a whiteboard for whole processes. A process often spans several Zaps, tables, forms, chatbots and manual steps done by people. Canvas lets you draw it: steps, split paths, text notes and groups, linked to the real Zaps and tables. You can generate a first draft with AI by describing the process, then adjust it.

Uses:

  • Plan before building, so you spot missing steps.
  • Document a system for colleagues: pin the canvas to a folder.
  • Collaborate: invite teammates to edit.

A good Canvas makes it obvious which Zap to open when something breaks.

Remember

  • Copilot drafts and edits Zaps, tables and forms from plain-language requests
  • Always test what Copilot builds
  • Canvas maps a whole process, including manual steps, and links to real assets
