Zapier MCP: let AI assistants use your apps

Zapier · Expert · 10 min

MCP turns Zapier's app catalogue into tools any compatible AI assistant can use, which is powerful and needs care.

Zaps run when an event happens. Sometimes you instead want to ask an AI assistant, in a chat, to do something: "add this person to HubSpot and invite them to Thursday's call". MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants plug into outside tools in a common way. Zapier MCP makes Zapier's apps available as such tools.

How it works:

  • Add Zapier as a connector in your AI client (the app you chat in, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor) and sign in.
  • Zapier sets up your MCP server (the place the assistant connects to) and enables actions for apps you've already connected. You can ask the assistant to enable more apps; it will prompt you to connect accounts as needed.
  • When you ask for something, the assistant finds the right Zapier action, asks for missing details, and runs it.

Each successful tool call uses Zapier tasks (two per call at the time of writing; failed calls don't count). Actions are logged in your history.

Controls and risks:

  • Your app passwords stay inside Zapier; the AI model never sees them.
  • Enable only the apps and actions you need, and remove access when done. Company admins can turn MCP on or off and may need to approve the connector.
  • Some setups use a connection token (a long secret link). Never share it: anyone with it can run your tools.
  • The assistant follows instructions it reads, including text hidden in emails or web pages. Keep write and delete actions narrow and review what it did.

Workflows you repeat often are better turned into Zaps, which run without a chat.

Remember

  • Zapier MCP exposes your connected apps as tools for MCP-compatible AI assistants
  • Enable only the actions you need; credentials stay in Zapier
  • Never share a connection token; review what the assistant did

Watch out for

  • Enabling every action of every app "just in case", giving the assistant far more power than the task needs.
