Drop-off between steps is the most actionable number in product analytics.
Funnel exploration answers "of the users who did A, how many went on to do B and C?". In Tab settings:
- Steps (up to ten): each step is a condition on an event, a dimension or a metric, e.g. Event name = view_item, then add_to_cart, then begin_checkout, then purchase. A step can have several conditions (page_location contains /pricing AND device category = mobile). Between steps you can choose is directly followed by (the next event the user fired) or is indirectly followed by (anything can happen in between, the default), and add a within time constraint (within 10 minutes, within 2 days).
- Visualisation: Standard funnel (bars with completion rate and abandonment per step) or Trended funnel (a line per step over time, so you can see whether a release moved step 3's completion).
- Make open funnel: see the next lesson.
- Breakdown: one dimension (device category, country, first user source) splitting every step into up to 15 rows.
- Show elapsed time: adds the average time users took between consecutive steps.
- Next action: shows the top five events (or page titles) users fired right after each step, which tells you where the drop-offs went instead.
- Segments (up to four) to compare, say, new vs returning users as separate funnels.
The canvas shows, per step, Users and Completion rate, plus Abandonments and Abandonment rate between steps. Funnels are user-based: a user who did step 2 before step 1 within the date range does not count as completing step 2.
Funnels are retroactive. Unlike Universal Analytics goal funnels, you can define a new funnel today and see last month's data, within the retention window.
Right-click a step to create a segment of users who dropped off there and send them to User explorer or build an audience from them.
Remember
- Steps are ordered event/dimension conditions; users must do them in order
- Directly vs indirectly followed, time constraints, breakdown, elapsed time, next action
- Retroactive within the retention window, unlike UA goal funnels
