Customising reports in the Library

Google Analytics · Practical · 9 min

The default reports rarely match your KPIs; editors can reshape them without touching Explore.

Users with the Editor or Administrator role can change what the Reports section contains. Two places:

Customise a report (pencil icon, top right of any report). For a detail report you can change the primary and secondary dimension lists, add or remove metrics, choose chart types, add a permanent report filter (for example, exclude hostname = staging.example.com) and reorder cards. Save either overwrites the current report or saves a copy. For overview reports you pick which summary cards appear.

Library (bottom of the Reports nav) is where collections are managed. A collection is a group of topics, each a group of reports. You can:

  • create a new detail report from scratch (Create new report): choose dimensions, metrics, charts and filters,
  • create a new overview report by assembling cards from existing reports,
  • create a collection, arrange topics and reports in it, and publish it so it appears in the left nav for everyone on the property,
  • unpublish or hide the default collections if the business-objective layout fits your team better.

Some linked data only appears once you publish its collection: the Search Console collection stays in the Library until you add it.

Limits: a property can hold up to 150 custom detail reports and a handful of custom collections; reports are property-wide, so one person's edit changes what everyone sees. That is both the point and the risk: agree on an owner.

When a question needs more than dimensions, metrics and one filter (segments, funnels, raw rows beyond the top 250), move to Explore.

Remember

  • Pencil icon customises a report; Library manages collections and new reports
  • Published collections appear for everyone on the property
  • Permanent filters live in custom reports; for segments and funnels go to Explore
